Press Statement on the Sentencing of politicians in Cameroon
It is with great sadness that we learn about the gross violation of human rights particularly political rights enshrined in the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) in Cameroon where the ‘separatist’ leaders and their followers have been sentenced to life imprisonment. This is an affront and gross violation of political rights that all citizens must enjoy including the right to propagate one’s thought and ideas through the freedom of speech and expression.
For the world to keep quiet, for the AU to be non-frantic at this stage defies all logic and begs the question of the role of the AU in protecting the rights of all Africans and standing as an umbrella body that concerns itself with the affairs of all African people.
It is clear then that the AU is concerned with protecting those in power, it is therefore in that respect a Trade Union of the African leaders and this is bothersome because the ordinary people in Africa remain with no protection at all. We have seen that many countries do not even want people to have direct access to these regional bodies as was expressed by Zimbabwe recently. What is there to hide? Surely if the country is doing well it does not matter which tribunal the matter is taken to because the outcome must still come back exonerating the government except if the government is abusing its people.
This state of affairs was again seen with the interference of the courts in Zimbabwe where people were denied the constitutionally enshrined right to protest and express their views. In the absence of acts of terror and insurgence, it should not matter the feared threats, the limitation and complete abrogation of the right to protest cannot be countenanced upon and its management can be handled in other ways than a complete ban.
The people of Cameroon, Ambazonia have a right to demand that Ambazonia be separated from Cameroon, they can express that thought even if they are two in total, they will democratically lose that campaign and that is the advent of democracy. No one can be accused of saying any propaganda in a 21st century community because governments, various communities, politicians, business organizations are all existent based on propaganda as long as there is no act of terror. Why would the separatist groups who have only been violated and abused for standing for their thoughts be denied the right to cultivate for their thoughts and spreading them?
The world is littered with Africans who flee such governments and they become problems of host countries courtesy to this kind of treatment and the problem of forced migration emanates thus. This must be condemned by all who care for the defenseless African populace. No right-thinking government or regional body nor community can accept such oppression and deprivation. We must all speak from the same position of sanity and clarity, we should not wait for America or Europe to sanction Cameroon, Africa must stand up and cut off completely the government of Cameroon until the right thing is done, we are sick and tired of African States standing with dictatorship and despotism. Sanity must prevail from now onwards, we call upon all governments of the people to stand with the people and cut out governments that impose themselves on the people.
We cannot continue with business as usual when migrants end up being butchered and ostracized in many host countries and yet we say nothing about the source of this evil, the governments driving these people from their home bases. Cameroon must stop arbitrary kangaroo courts and judgments.
